This franchise has a big hand in bringing Punjabi cinema back on track. When Carry On Jatta released in 2012, the industry was going through a rough patch. A few films were being made throughout the year and the ones that were being made were not working. After the murder of Virendra Singh, the first superstar of Punjabi cinema in 1988, the condition of the industry started deteriorating again and it was on the verge of closure. Virendra was the cousin of Bollywood star Dharmendra.

After this, there were struggles to save the industry for 24 years and finally Carry On Jatta revived the industry. Due to some films that came after this, the condition and direction of Pollywood changed. The industry’s revenue in 2015 was 241 crores, but now after eight years its turnover has crossed 500 crores. Now 40-45 films are being produced in a year.

2012 is called the golden year of Punjabi cinema. The industry achieved several milestones this year. Like Gippy Grewal’s film Mirza: The Untold Story, Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa’s film Jatt and Juliet released and became blockbusters. This film established both the stars as superstars in Punjabi films. Then in July, Carry On Jatta was released, which gave a new lease of life to Punjabi cinema by doing a worldwide business of 18 crores. The pair of Gippy Grewal and Mahi Gill were seen in the film. The film was such a success that it was remade in Oriya, Telugu and Bengali languages.

The period after 2012 proved successful for Punjabi cinema. Stars like Gippy Grewal, Neeru Bajwa, Diljit Dosanjh and Surveen Chawla became quite popular. Apart from this, films were also released on many social issues which made people aware of the reality of Punjab, due to which freshness was seen in the content of cinema. Student life of Punjab, Chandigarh was shown in award winning films like Nabar, Stupid 7.

The Punjabi film industry had a turnover of 400 to 500 crores before the Corona period, but it also suffered huge losses during the Corona epidemic. In Pollywood, up to 70 percent of the crew work on daily wages, in front of which the crisis of livelihood has arisen. Apart from this, the music industry had also gone into loss due to the ban on live music performance. However, slowly everything is back on track. Now the turnover of the industry has crossed 500 crores.
