Shankar was born on 17 August 1963 in Kumbakonam, District Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. His full name is Shankar Shanmugam. He did Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Central Polytechnic College, Thanjavur. After this he started working in a typewriting company. Shankar was always interested in films and wanted to become an actor.

He also used to do the work of making stage shows. He also had a small team. Once on these stage shows famous Tamil filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar’s vision fell. He gave Shankar a chance in films as a scriptwriter.

Shankar was hesitant about this offer, as he wanted to become an actor. After much thought, Shankar appointed S.A. Chandrasekhar’s offer was accepted. After this, Chandrasekhar gave him the job of assistant director in the film Jai Shiv Shankar (1990).

Shankar made his directorial debut in 1993 with the film Gentleman. He won the Filmfare Best Director Award for his first film. Apart from this, he also received the Best Director Award at the Tamil Nadu State Film Award.

After this, his two films Indian (1996) and Mudhalvan (1998) were quite successful. They were sent from India to the Academy Award ie Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but both could not get the nomination.

Shankar tried his luck as an actor along with direction, but he did not get as much success as he got as a director. He worked as an actor in the films Vasanth Ragam and Sita. Apart from this, his special appearances were seen in Indian, Shivaji: The Boss and Nanban.

In 2005, Shankar made a psychological thriller film titled Anniyan (Aparichit) in which superstar Vikram played three characters. This film got tremendous success. After Anniyan, Shankar came into limelight for directing superstar Rajinikanth’s film Sivaji: The Boss. It was the costliest film of that time, with a budget of 60 crores.
