Veteran Bollywood actress Sulochana Latkar passed away late on Sunday night. 94-year-old Sulochana was admitted to the hospital on May 8 due to respiratory infection. Sulochana had told in an interview that her real name was Nagabai. Famous Marathi director Bhalji Pendharkar named her Sulochana. At the age of just 14, Sulochana was married to Abasaheb Chavan, a zamindar of Kolhapur. In the beginning of her career, Sulochana worked as a lead actress in many Hindi and Marathi films. In these films, she appeared opposite actors like Ashok Kumar, Trilok Kapoor and Nazir Hussain.
Sulochana played the role of mother or grandmother of many famous actors and actresses in her career. In the 1960s and early 70s, she appeared in the role of mother to superstars like Dev Anand, Sunil Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Rajesh Khanna. In an interview, she had said that she would have loved to play mother to Dev Anand, Sunil Dutt and Rajesh Khanna.
Sulochana was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Filmfare Life Time Achievement Award in 2004. In 2009, the Government of Maharashtra presented Sulochana with the prestigious Maharashtra Bhushan Award.
On Amitabh Bachchan’s 75th birthday, Sulochana gave him a handwritten letter. The actress wrote in this letter, ‘My dear Chiranjeevi Amit. Today you have turned 75 years old. This special day is called Amritmahotsav in Marathi. I pray to God that he keeps showering nectar in your life like this. Amitabh also became emotional while taking this letter from Sulochana.
Hindi films like ‘Aae Din Bahaar Ke’, ‘Gora Aur Kala’, ‘Devar’, ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, ‘Talaash’ and ‘Azad’ and films like ‘Sasurwas’, ‘Vahinichya Bangdya’ and ‘ Marathi movies like ‘Dhakti Jao’. The film ‘Pariksha’ released in 2007 was Sulochana’s last film.
