On this day 15 years ago, Aamir Khan launched his nephew Imran Khan in Bollywood. The name of the film was ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’, which was also produced by Aamir Khan himself. Made in just 10 crores, this film had a world wide collection of 84 crores.

The film also went on and Imran also received the Filmfare Award for Best Debutant Male. This film was not only Imran but also one of the successful films of his co-star Genelia D’Souza’s career. Know some stories related to this film…

In an interview to Hindustan Times, Genelia said, ‘Since it was an Aamir Khan production film, I had to give three screen tests for it. During the audition, Emraan had told me that he liked other actresses for the role of Aditi. He was also comfortable with her but when he saw me on screen with him, he was shocked. He felt as if he and I were childhood friends. After this I got casting. We also did a month-long reading workshop before we started shooting for the film.

Prateik Babbar, son of Raj Babbar and Smita Patil, also debuted with this film. He played the role of Genelia’s brother in the film. For this, he was given the Special Jury Mention Award of Filmfare.

Aamir Khan had told in an interview that Atul Kulkarni had the idea of making ‘Lal Singh Chadha’ when he returned after watching the screening of ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’. Aamir said- ‘I and Atul Kulkarni came to the house after the premiere of ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na’ 14 years ago. When Atul asked me the name of my favorite film, I told him that ‘Forrest Gump’ is one of them. Two weeks later, Atul called and told me that I had written the screenplay for the Hindi adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’.

Arbaaz and Sohail Khan played cameo roles in this film. Both were seen in the role of Jai’s cousin brother Bhalu and Bagheera. Shakun Batra, director of films like ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu’, ‘Kapoor & Sons’ and ‘Gehraiyaan’, played the role of geek student Nilesh in the film. Actress Pakhi Tyrewala was the assistant director on the sets of this film. During the shooting, she first met the director of the film, Abbas Tyrewala, and the two got married.
