The film Ajmer 92 is releasing today. Its story is based on the country’s biggest rape scandal, which took place in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Around 250 girls were raped for months by blackmailing them with their objectionable photos and videos. The influential people of Ajmer were involved in this scandal. When it was revealed in 1992, the whole country was shocked.
The first news on this scandal was published by the local newspaper Dainik Navjyoti, after which people came to know about this heinous crime. In 1992, the Chief Editor of Dainik Navjyoti was Dinabandhu Chowdhary. He had revealed the layers of this scandal from the very first news brought by a reporter.
On the occasion of the release of Ajmer 92, we spoke to him to know the story behind the revelations of this case. Deenbandhu Chowdhary told us how the whole scandal came to light through the news of a reporter.
In 1992, one of our reporters was Santosh Gupta. He came up with a news and published it, but no one paid attention to that news, even though it was a very serious news. Then he came to me and informed about this scandal.
He told me – there was a Bharosa laboratory in the grain market of Ajmer. There used to work on the negatives of the films. I was standing near the same lab, then a person came and bought 4 reels, but instead of that reel he gave four times the money. I was surprised to see this and started thinking what was special about that reel? I had a friend there with me, from whom I wanted to know the story behind it. At first he refused, but because of my insistence he gave me 4 reels. When I saw that reel, it had rape videos and photos of girls.
When I heard all this, I asked reporter Santosh to publish these nude photos in the news. I took this step because it was necessary to put an end to such a terrible scandal. Although the private parts which were in the photos, we had printed everything else by putting a black strip on them. The next day when this news came in front of the people, there was a lot of hue and cry. As soon as this news came to the fore, all the lawyers of the Bar Association gathered and reached the SP and the Collector. Then he demanded action in this case. His move triggered legal action.
