Businessman Raj Kundra is currently in the news because of his film UT-69. Raj Kundra himself has played his real life character in this film. What happened to him in jail after being trapped in a pornography case. What effect did it have on his wife Shilpa Shetty and children? Raj has tried to show all those things in this film.
Raj Kundra Said that Shilpa had suffered the most after getting trapped in the case. Many brands were lost from his hands. His name was wrongly mentioned in the media. He was targeted unnecessarily. Raj spent a total of 63 days in jail. These were the worst 63 days of his life. During the initial days of jail, he also had thoughts of suicide.
Raj said that he used to get diarrhea after eating jail food. The water was so dirty that there was a gas problem. Prisoners used to smoke beedis in the room itself, this could have caused huge harm. It was very hot in the jail, fan was the only support. After serving his sentence, Sanjay Dutt had installed many fans in Arthur Road Jail. Raj used to pray to Sanjay Dutt every day for this.
Raj said- When my name came in this case, Shilpa suffered the most. She had a few brands. That too got out of hand. Shilpa and the children were also spoken ill of. I don’t understand what was his fault in this.
Shilpa has a different identity. There was no need to drag her into this matter. Even a group of media did not treat me right. My media trial was done. Words like ‘Shilpa’s husband’ were used. Shilpa was deeply hurt by this.
What problems did one face while staying in jail? In response, Raj said- There were problems regarding food and drink. Watery pulses were available. Diarrhea occurred after eating. The water there was such that after drinking it one would face gas problem.
I used to buy mineral water and drink it. Every prisoner used to get Rs 4500. The entire month’s work had to be done in that. Got a chance to go to the canteen twice a month. I used to buy food items at one go. The food was completely tasteless. I used to buy spices etc., mix them with food and eat them.
Raj Kundra said that in the first 10 days of jail, he even had thoughts of suicide. Raj said- I was completely broken from inside. I used to wonder what harm I have done to anyone. I don’t have any social circle. My friends are also limited, there is no one else in my life except my wife, children and parents. When I came out of jail, father started crying after seeing me. I also started crying hugging my children.
I did not realize in time what happened to me. It felt as if I had committed some sin in my previous life and was being punished for it. I used to be an atheist. After going to jail, devotion towards God increased. Now I fast for 9 days.
Raj said that people used to smoke beedis in jail, it caused a lot of problems. He had talked to the jail officer about making rules regarding smoking beedis. Raj said- People get freedom to smoke beedi in jail.
Although I had a problem with it. People used to smoke beedis and throw them there. There were too many people living in the same room. If that beedi had fallen on a sheet etc., it could have caused a fire. Due to this many people would have lost their lives at once. After this, a smoking area was made there, where any prisoner can go and smoke comfortably.
What did Raj Kundra do to keep himself busy in jail? In response to this he said- We used to get a time slot throughout the day in which we could watch TV. Could play carrom once a week. There was also an option to play Ludo.
Raj Kundra said that the temperature inside the jail was always high. Due to which it was very hot there. Raj said- It used to be very hot when the fan was switched off. If the fan was switched off for five minutes, he would become drenched in sweat. Then we could understand in which area we were living.
If fans were not there, it would have been difficult for us to live. I am very thankful to Sanjay Dutt ji for this. He has installed many fans in Arthur Road Jail. For this I used to pray to him every day in jail.
Should Shilpa Shetty also have had a small role in the film? In response to this, Raj said- Shilpa and I could not meet during our stay in jail. Conversations took place over the phone only. Our telephonic talk is shown in the film. You will definitely get to hear his voice. We wanted to keep the story real. Whatever happened in reality is shown in the film.
I spoke to Shilpa on phone 10 days after going to jail. It had never happened before that we both did not talk for so many days. Even when we were apart, we used to make video calls four to five times a day. When Shilpa called from jail for the first time, that moment was very difficult for both of us.
The film’s director Shahnawaz Ali said that initially Raj Kundra wanted to write a book. He had written his entire story. Shahnawaz told Raj that not a book but a film should be made on this story. However, the problem was that who should be cast as the actor in the film.
Raj Kundra was arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police in July 2021 on charges of making porn films. Raj’s name came up in this case when some models and struggling actresses accused him of forcibly making obscene films.
While investigating, the police raided Raj’s premises and arrested him. He was jailed for 2 months in this case. Due to lengthy court proceedings, Raj got bail from Mumbai Sessions Court in September 2021.
