Arun Govil was seen in the role of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s serial Ramayana. While on one hand he got immense love from the fans after doing this role, on the other hand his career was also affected due to this. After doing this serial, Arun Govil was time cast.
His career in commercial cinema was almost over. Because of this, he was also forced to think whether playing the role of Lord Ram was a mistake. Arun Govil himself has said all these things in a recent interview.
In an interview given to News 18, Arun Govil told that his career was affected after doing Ramayana serial. He said, ‘I was a commercial actor before doing Ramayana. I was doing good work, but after working in Ramayana, I could not work there. So I started thinking it was a mistake. As an actor, if you are not working in commercial cinema then you are doing nothing.
At that time, working in a mythological show was not a great thing. My friends and family people said – Why are you doing Ramayana? This will not bring much profit. By doing such work you will get trapped in this.
After doing this, he had to face a lot of difficulties as an actor. But, later I understood this when I got a lot of love from the audience. If I had been a commercial actor I would not have got so much love. Now, I feel that if I had not done this role, I would not have been able to live my life.
Arun Govil also talked about the love he received from fans. He said, ‘The level of love and respect that I have received, if any normal person had received this much praise, he would not have had his head on his shoulders. I often wonder what do people see in me? God is giving me all this and I tell myself to take whatever he gives. He has blessed me a lot. But, I have no credit in this, I have not done anything, I am just a medium.
The TV show Ramayan was created by Ramanand Sagar. In the serial, Arun Govil played the role of Ram, Deepika Chikhaliya played the role of Sita, Arvind Trivedi played the role of Ravana, Sunil Lahiri played the role of Laxman and Dara Singh played the role of Hanuman. Ramayana was first telecast on Doordarshan on 25 January 1987. Its last episode aired on 31 July 1988. There were a total of 87 episodes in this serial.
The popularity of the serial increased so much that whenever it came on TV, there was silence everywhere. There used to be curfew like situations outside the houses. Ramanand Sagar himself did not believe that the serial made by him would become so historic.
