Thalaiva alias Rajinikanth, who is worshiped like a god in the South, has turned 73 today. With age, Rajinikanth’s fan following and his records are also increasing every year. In the same year, Rajinikanth’s film Jailer changed the history of Tamil cinema by earning more than Rs 600 crore. Rajinikanth is the only actor from South whose two Tamil films have collected more than Rs 500.

Even at this stage of age, Rajinikanth becomes a hero and single-handedly takes charge of the film and creates records. Whereas all his peer heroes now play supporting roles only. Rajinikanth is the highest paid actor not only of South India but also of India, who took a fee of Rs 210 crore for the film Jailer.

Bus Conductor to Superstar

Yet all these achievements pale in comparison to the passion of all those fans who consider and worship Rajinikanth as their God. This is the reason why when Rajinikanth’s film is released in South, a holiday is declared in many places. There is an atmosphere of celebration and it would be surprising if there are no riots over tickets.

Rajinikanth has the record of having the largest number of fan clubs. There is no counting of the entire 66 thousand registered and unregistered fangroups. However, there was a time in the 80s, when all the directors and distributors had said that Rajinikanth’s career was over. Meanwhile, a film by Amitabh Bachchan became a means for Rajinikanth to regain stardom.

After his father’s retirement, Rajinikanth’s family faced financial crisis. In such a situation, Rajinikanth started working as a porter. Since his income was less, he used to do other small jobs also. After some time, due to his skills, he got the job of bus conductor in Bangalore Transport Company.

Rajinikanth, in his powerful voice, used to give tickets to people in great style, to see which every passenger’s eyes were fixed on him. Other bus conductors and drivers used to like Rajinikanth a lot.

One day playwright Topi Muniappa was traveling in a bus, when his eyes fell on bus conductor Rajinikanth. He liked Rajni’s style very much. He immediately offered Rajini to be a part of his play. Rajini also agreed and along with working as a conductor, he also started acting.

While working as a bus conductor, Rajinikanth became friends with Nirmala, a medical student studying in Bangalore. After some time both of them started liking each other and then both of them fell in love. One day Rajinikanth called his girlfriend to watch the play.

Rajinikanth’s acting was so strong that his girlfriend said- You should become a hero. Rajinikanth himself wanted to learn acting, so one day Nirmala filled his form for admission in Madras Film Institute, thanks to which Rajinikanth got admission.

Rajini’s poor family was against his decision, but when friend and co-worker Raj Bahadur provided financial help, Rajinikanth took admission here. One day during the acting course, Rajinikanth was approached by the famous South director K. Balachander’s gaze fell.

Balachander told him that if he could learn Tamil language, he would cast him in his film. Rajinikanth gained a strong hold on the Tamil language within a few days and got the film Apoorva Rangagal (1975).

25 year old Rajinikanth played a side role with actors Kamal Haasan and Srividya in the film, however, he caught everyone’s attention with his skills from the very first film. This film received 3 National Awards. In his early career, Rajinikanth was given only villain roles in films like Katha Sangam, Balu Jenu, Aavargal, 16 Vayadhinili.

After doing small roles in many films, Rajinikanth got a big role in the 1976 film Moondru Mudichu. Kamal Haasan was in the lead role in the film and in this film, 13 year old Sridevi was seen as the lead for the first time. At that time, Kamal Haasan was considered a big actor, his fee was Rs 30 thousand, whereas Rajinikanth’s fee was only Rs 2 thousand. Sridevi, who was doing her first film as a lead, was also paid Rs 5,000 more than Rajnikanth. While flipping cigarettes with style in the film, Rajinikanth was greatly appreciated by the audience and people started copying his style.

Rajinikanth was cast as a hero for the first time in the 1977 film Chilakamma Cheppindi. Rajinikanth received the nomination for Filmfare Best Actor with his strong acting. The year that changed Rajinikanth’s life was 1978, when he was cast as the solo lead in the film Bairvi. With the release of the film, Rajinikanth became a superstar overnight and started being called a superstar.

Rajinikanth married Lata Rangachari in the year 1981. Rajinikanth first met Lata when she had come to interview the actor for her college magazine. Rajini fell in love with Lata at first sight while she was being interviewed, due to which both of them got married. Lata is 8 years younger than Rajni. The couple has two daughters, Soundarya and Aishwarya.

People worship superstar Rajini like a god in the South. Fans have also built a temple in the name of Rajinikanth. Many times, while watching the film, fans threw so many coins that even the screen burst. In view of this, a ban was imposed on carrying coins in cinema halls.

On the day of the release of Rajinikanth’s film Kabali in 2016, companies in many southern cities announced a holiday. Some companies even distributed free tickets to their employees. Fan of Rajinikanth. Mani sold all his wife’s jewelery to throw a grand party on her birthday. After the incident came to light, G Mani got a place in a documentary of Rajni.

During the Corona period, South actors were donating enthusiastically. In such a situation, a debate started between the fans of actor Vijay and Rajinikanth living in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu as to which actor donated more. The argument escalated so much that Rajinikanth’s 22-year-old fan Dinesh Babu beat Vijay’s fan Yuvraj so much that he died.

Murugesan, a fan who worshiped Rajini like a god, wanted him to enter politics. To convey his demand to him, that fan tried to commit suicide by setting fire outside Rajni’s house. The burnt fan was immediately taken to the hospital, where somehow his life was saved.

In 2021, Rajinikanth was admitted to the hospital for a routine checkup. In Mani Ratnam’s film Thalapathy Rajini, Rajini’s character was going to be shown dying, but due to fear of riots, the makers changed their decision and re-shot the scene. Rajinikanth’s net worth is 51 million dollars i.e. 430 crore rupees. However, despite this, he is out of the list of the rich of the country. The reason for this is Rajni’s social work. Rajni uses a large part of his income every month for charity and social work.

According to Naman Ramachandran, who wrote his autobiography Rajinikanth: The Definitive Biography, Rajinikanth never mentions the social work he does, although he spends a large portion of his earnings every month in donating and helping people.
