Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Bollywood Actor Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan starrer Adipurush is releasing on June 16. Its story is based on Ramayana in which Prabhas has become Lord Ram, Kriti Sita and Saif Ravan. Film making on mythological subjects may have reduced in the current era, but the formula for making a film on Ramayana has always proved to be a superhit.

This is the reason that in the history of 111 years of Hindi cinema, 48 films and 18 TV shows have been made on Ramayana so far and most of the films have earned well at the box office. In 1917 i.e. 106 years ago, Lanka Dahan had earned 35 thousand rupees in 10 days.

Its earnings were carried to the producers by filling them in bullock carts as most of the coins came from ticket sales. Ram-Rajya, which came in 1943, had also earned 60 lakh rupees in that period. This film was one of the favorite films of Mahatma Gandhi.

Well, the interesting thing is that even though so many movies and TV shows have been made on Ramayana, but before Adipurush only one movie showed Ram with a moustache. This film was released 23 years ago i.e. in 2000, whose name was Devullu. This was a Telugu film in which Srikanth, playing the role of Ram, was shown sporting a moustache.

The trend of making films on mythological subjects started in India around 106 years back in 1917. The 1917 film Lanka Dahan was the first film based on the Ramayana in Hindi cinema. The special thing about the film was that the role of Ram and Sita was played by the same actor whose name was Anna Salunke. At that time, women were reluctant to work in films, so Anna Salunke played two characters in the film.
