Bengali films superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee has been making headlines in recent times for his Hindi web series ‘Jubilee’. He has shared his happiness with Dainik Bhaskar. Here are the highlights of our recent conversation with him:-
You have spent 40 years in the industry. Have you noticed any new changes?
Not the story, but yes there have been a lot of changes in the script. The emotions and relationships of the characters have become especially realistic. I have more than a hundred songs from earlier times, where I am kissing my heroine, but a flower pops up on the screen. Or the tree came up and the camera panned. That can’t happen in today’s movies. The way we are dealing with life in real life, the same has happened in films now. Although, of course, larger than life films are also being made. He will be there.
Apart from acting, which part of filmmaking do you enjoy the most?
I am a technician first, then an actor. I will try to make a national level film within a year and a half, two years. I did it in Bengal. I have done 300-350 films as an actor. Now our time has also come, not just to make a picture. As Ajay Devgan is doing. That’s how long we’ve been in the industry. So it’s time for us to share our experience.
Will the next part of Jubilee also come?
It has got a lot of love. All of us artists associated with this are very happy. Now although we all are very busy with our work, but whenever we get free time, we keep in touch with everyone. When I am in Mumbai, I try to meet everyone. If he comes to Kolkata, we spend great time together there. We all have made a commitment to each other that we will continue the Jubilee.
What colors did you fill in that character?
In fact, Vikramaditya Motwani is such a good director that only two to three hours of discussion took place with him a day for the character. Since I have also been working for so many years, I have caught what they want? If you look carefully, you will find that the reference of Godfather is coming everywhere in Shrikant Roy. However, from Vikram’s side, there was nothing that he wanted. All he said was that he wanted the same format. The experience of the rest, which has been the artwork of my work like ‘Chokherbali’, was also useful. Of course, I didn’t do any other work during that time. Didn’t do anything for a year and a half.
How is Bengali cinema performing in comparison to the South?
I would like to ask you These days that pan India term is going on regarding South films. This is a new language. Tell me one thing when Roza came or Chokherbali was made, what was that? I would like to name their directors. Mani Ratnam and Rituparno Ghosh. They made the film. Every regional cinema has a different ambience. Chokherbali was seen by the audience of every language. Kantara, I did not know that he would do such a feat. There is no package in it.
What was the challenge regarding the character of Shrikant Roy?
They will always be there. Even today, when the camera rolls, my heart starts pounding. The complication here was that people find Srikant Roy negative in the scene, but he is busy saving his empire. Even Sumitra Kumari says that whatever you say about that person, but you cannot say anything about his devotion towards cinema. Like I had a film with Rituparna Ghosh. Where my character makes mistakes. His wife catches him. My character has an accident. Then in the end, what is the perception about that person, it was very complicated in itself.
