According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a rape is reported in every 15 minutes. Further, more than half of these are still pending and are somewhere lost in the whole process of getting justice. One such beyond the pale and atrocious incident took place on July 4, 2017, in Kothkhai of Himachal Pradesh. A 16-year girl was brutally gang-raped and was killed by choking while she was returning home from school by walk. Also, several harsh burning marks of cigarettes were found on the body of the victim.
Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur enquired the chief secretary and director general of police (DGP) last in 2019 regarding this case. The father of the victim is not satisfied with the investigations being done in the case and has shown disappointment several times. In the year 2020, the guardians of the victim again have expressed their dissatisfaction related to the probe.
After the CBI investigation, only two wood-cutters were arrested, but according to two forensic experts from a Gandhinagar lab, has shown the possibility of more people involved. The family of the victim is unconvinced with the arrest of only one person and still seeking justice for their ferociously raped and killed daughter.
The constant doubt about the influence on the investigation of CBI is there, which the family wants to clear. The doubts were raised because the claims of CBI about forensic evidence does not support the facts opined by forensic experts.
Four years and the case is still pending as if it sank into obvilion. Moreover, no interest is being shown from the side of the Government to deliver justice. No significant media coverage was given to this incident, which can give chills to anyone having a female in their homes.
The peaceful state of Himachal Pradesh is encountering such incidents more with each upcoming day. The question that arises here is, when justice for such heinous crimes will become a priority for all?
