During college days, 22-year-old Madhavan was selected as the top 7 NCC cadet of Maharashtra. With this, the Government of Maharashtra sent him on a tour of England, where he took training in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. After taking training here, he decided that he too would join the army and serve the country. However, this dream of his remained just a dream. He was not selected because of his young age of 6 months. After this he started training in Public Speaking and Personality Development Course. During this he represented India at the Young Business Conference in Tokyo, Japan in 1992.
Madhavan’s love story is also quite interesting. He was married to Sarita Birje. Once Madhavan had organized a speaking course workshop in Kolhapur. Sarita Birje wanted to become an airhostess. He joined Madhavan’s workshop for personality development. Both of them met for the first time in the workshop itself.
With the help of this class, Sarita easily cleared the interview of air hostess. He had invited Madhavan on a date to say thank you. Even after this date, the process of meeting both continued. Both dated each other for 8 years, then got married in 1999. The wedding took place as per Tamil rituals and was attended by only close friends and family. Madhavan’s film career started only after marriage. Sarita has also designed the costumes for some of his films.
Madhavan made a portfolio of himself and submitted it to a modeling agency. He thought that this would bring in a little more income. After this in 1996, he got a chance to work in Powder’s ad. This ad was directed by Santosh Shivan. Sivan suggested Mani Ratnam to take Madhavan’s screen test for the film Iruvar. Madhavan later auditioned for the film Tamizhselvan but was rejected by Mani Ratnam. However, Madhavan later made his debut in the South Industry with his own film.
R Madhavan made his Bollywood debut in 2001 with the film Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein. Earlier, he had worked in the film Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi released in 1996, but he was not given credit for the work in it.
