Oscar Winner ‘The Boy And The Heron’ Released On Netflix

Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ recently won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Now there is good news for its viewers. The film is set to entertain audiences on global streaming platform Netflix later this year. This film will be released on Netflix worldwide except America and Japan. After Netflix extended its contract with the animation studio founded by Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, it gained the rights to stream an additional 22 Studio Ghibli films.

Netflix has not yet announced the premiere date of ‘The Boy and the Heron’. It is an animated film based on Miyazaki’s childhood memories. It is Miyazaki’s first film in 10 years, he also wrote the original story and directed the film. ‘The Boy and the Heron’ was a box office hit in Japan, earning over $85 million. It opened the Toronto Film Festival with its world premiere and topped the North American box office charts with a record-breaking $12.8 million in its opening weekend.

Max got exclusive rights to stream Studio Ghibli films in the US. Max signed a deal with GKIDS, which handles North American distribution for Studio Ghibli. Under the agreement, Max can host the studio’s library on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.

Netflix also picked up another Miyazaki film from Studio Ghibli, Spirited Away, which previously won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2003. Apart from this, ‘Princess Mononoke’, ‘Arrietty’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ and ‘The Tale of the Princess’ will also be streamed on Netflix. Netflix streams these movies with subtitles in 28 languages and dubbed in 20 languages across Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America
