The film ‘Pathan’ is going to clash with Rajkumar Santoshi’s film ‘Gandhi Godse: Ek Yuddh’ on Republic Day. Its story revolves around the freedom India got. Makers have also tried to keep Nathuram Godse’s side through this film.
Talking about this, Rajkumar Santoshi said, ‘The idea of this film came from our friend Asgar Wajahat’s play ‘Godse@gandhi.com’. Although that play did not happen on much stage. I personally felt that Godse’s side has not been fully revealed to the people. Godse was hanged but why was Godse forced to take the step of killing Gandhiji? What were Godse’s arguments, he remained suppressed for 70 years. The aspects of Godse have now come out in the public domain in the last four years.
Rajkumar Santoshi further says, ‘We have used Asgar Wajahat’s play as well as Godse’s arguments in the court in the film. All the statements of Godse which have been recorded in the court. Undoubtedly, we have taken creative liberty in the dialogue and argument between Gandhi and Godse in jail. In the trailer, we have shown Godse’s argument that who were responsible for the partition, people will get to see Gandhiji’s argument and explanation in the film.
Rajkumar Santoshi had taken a different take on Mahatma Gandhi instead of the popular take on Mahatma Gandhi in his ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ before this film. It was shown in the story that Gandhi was against Bhagat Singh. If he wanted, he could have stopped the legal action of the British on Bhagat Singh. Santoshi says about this, ‘I have taken a different stand on Gandhi here too. I was afraid whether the film would be able to pass the censor or not? But the censor did not cut even a single word.
Rajkumar Santoshi said, ‘I have not taken any side in the film. I have kept the truth. My first choice for the role of Godse has always been Chinmay Mandlekar. I wanted a Marathi actor only so that Godse’s accent would have a Marathi touch. We have cast only Marathi actor for the role of Vishnu Karkare. Apart from this, Gujarati actor Deepak Antani has been cast for Gandhiji.
However, the portion of the film was created in Mumbai itself. The film was shot for almost 22 days in Mumbai. Actor Sandeep Bhojak, who plays jailer Amod Rai in the film, has shared specific details related to the film. He said, ‘From the set of the interior of Birla House, to the then PMO, to the hospital for riot victims to the prison barrack where Gandhi Godse’s dialogue takes place, all were created in Mumbai. The entire outdoor shooting was completed in 45 days in two schedules in Bhopal. The film has faced both the waves of Kovid.
Bihar has been recreated in the film at Panchmarhi near Bhopal. Sandeep explains, ‘In addition to Asgar Wajahat’s play in this film, Gandhiji’s arguments have also been prepared from the books written by Gandhiji. The book ‘Why I Killed Gandhi’ on Godse’s statements in the court has also been taken as facts in the film. Although Godse was kept in Ambala jail, but he was recreated in Bhopal jail. There the jail stay sequence was shot in 12 to 15 days. In this, I am in the role of jailer Amod Rai. For that, I gained around 20 kilos and also grew my moustache.
