Despite achieving stardom, Vicky Kaushal hasn’t changed the way he approaches the character skin. He had given weeks, months before the shoot for the films ‘Masaan’, ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’, ‘Uri’. He also kept the same pattern for ‘Sardar Udham’. Before the shoot, he had moved from Mumbai to Amritsar. Spent two and a half to three months there. Did extensive research about Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Absorbed that pain. He has three to four looks in the film. He played at the age of 20, 25, 35 and 40. About 15 to 16 kg of weight was also lost.
The makers have also kept a distance from the frenetic slogans of patriotism in the film. The makers had earlier narrated it to Irrfan. At the same time it was reported that Irfan was ill, then that project was stopped. Lastly which again started with Vicky Kaushal.
The director of the film Shoojit Sircar told in a special conversation – Vicky had heartily agreed for this film. He didn’t take it as an ordinary film. He did not approach like a star, but like an actor. He was inspired by the ideology of Udham Singh. Gave him some music from that zone. He caught the tone of the character from him. He himself stayed in Amritsar for two and a half to three months before the shoot. There he did research on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Carry that pain inside you.
Shoojit further said – We have not allowed it to become a spicy patriotic film. In the dialogues, the slogans that create hysteria about patriotism have not been thrown. It is very easy for a writer, director to do all this. We’ve stayed away from it here. Freedom Fighter’s Journey is not exaggerated. Udham Singh’s childhood was spent in an orphanage. His elder brother also died in his teen age. There is no one in the world other than his family. We could get it from the Inquiry Commission sitting on the research material murder case.
By the way, 25 to 30 years have gone in research. That’s because it was in my mind since school and college days. Then in recent years we met a lot of people. The one he assigned to Michael O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall is on the public platform. There is also a debate whether Udham Singh was present in Jallianwala Bagh or not.
The film was originally shot in Amritsar and Russia. England has been recreated for the film in Russia. There the makers have created the England and India of the 19th century. Jallianwala Bagh, Caxton Hall, the streets of London, everything was created. That is because in today’s date nothing of the 19th century has been found in London. Shoojit says – We have adopted the reverse method here too. We have spent a lot on the visual effects, but have kept it in such a way that the film does not look too dazzling.
